Why? Why? Why?
Frequently during our contemplation over things that happen, this one word statement is the first thing we say or hear. Many times it’s ‘Why God?’ because people have a picture of God in their minds that sees Him as this maniacal ogre Who gains some pleasure out of our pains and tragedies. During 9/11 this was everyone’s exclamation.
We are frail and finite creatures who do not and cannot understand God. He tells us that His ways are not our ways nor are our thoughts His thoughts. God is Sovereign and this means He can do what He wants, when He wants, to whom He wants with no one to report to or put boundaries on Him. He after all created us.
God has a plan. There is an end to all but not before His plan is complete. In the mean time there are people who need to hear about Him and make up their minds as to what they are going to do with what they have heard. When all have come to Him that are His, when He is satisfied and not until, that is when this present existence will end.
All through Scripture we read of the coming Messiah. To many this meant the One who would set up His kingdom, end slavery and tyrannical kings and we would finally see the peace that was promised where the sheep could lie down with the lion. Each generation felt that this was the one who would see this take place.
People are impatient, God is not. Messiah came just as was foretold and in the very way that was told. John the Baptist saw and recognized Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Yet though John Knew Jesus and believed in who He was, John had a moment when even he had to ask “is this the One or do we look for another?” There John sat in a dungeon awaiting to be put to death, did the Messiah set John free from prison? No, what a surprise to John huh?
We ask, Why? Why do things like this happen to innocent people? John may have asked this same thing when the guillotine started its decent to his neck. You may say, “Why is this in the bible?” My answer to you is that God in His divine omniscience knew you would ask ‘why’ one day so He gave an example to answer these questions.
Our tendency right now is to look at all that is happening in our present day and wonder where is God and why has He allowed this. Surely God is going to put an end to this soon. We could be way off. It isn’t for us to know the times of His coming.
My feeling is that we need to be busy with our Father’s business. We need to keep our focus on Christ and we need to pray. Great Empires have fallen over the immoral climate of their nations and we are headed for the same demise. Why does God allow innocent ones to die in terrible catastrophes? Not one of us is innocent, the only One who was hung on a cross for us.
God is merciful for I believe children before the age of accountability go right to Jesus’ arms.
Let us remember that even babies aren’t innocent as is Jesus.
